ImageMost of us have an ‘ecological footprint’ that is fairly damaging to God’s beautiful planet. Why not try to reduce yours by cutting out both the transport miles and excessive packaging of supermarket goods by shopping for local produce.

As well as the various farm shops around, for locally produced food and wine try visiting some of the farmers’ markets listed below?  And why stop there? Hosting an evening of ‘tasting’ either locally produced or fair trade food and wine could make a great Home Group or Cluster social event!

  • Farmers’ Fayres, Saturdays 9.30-12.30:
    • First of month – Linton Village College
    • Second of month – Comberton Village College
    • Third of month – Impington Village College
    • Fourth of month – Great Shelford Memorial Hall
  • Cambridge Farmers’ Market, Sundays 10.30-4.30, Market Square
Way 17: Get your Milk Delivered Print E-mail

ImageFirst thing in the morning, you wake up, go for the first cup of tea and coffee – and there's no milk in the fridge. Will you have to get your clothes on and nip around to the local shop before breakfast?

Or, would you prefer to open the front door, and get much fresher milk from your doorstep? No hassle, and the milkman will even collect your empties, meaning that you won't fill up your recycling bin nearly so fast. Also, it wins on food miles, since from some dairies the milk has travelled less distance. Finally, most milkmen will deliver extras, including heavy objects such as potatoes, cat litter or even dishwasher/water softener salt, saving you even more effort.

Local dairies include:
  • Plumbs dairy: Address: Home Dairy, 107 High St, Cambridge. CB1 6EP, 01223 893033
  • Dairy Crest Ltd: Address: 12 Mercers Rw, Cambridge. CB5 8HY telephone: 01223 358775
Way 15: Shopping at Supermarkets Print E-mail

ImageSupermarkets have made our lives easier and our food cheaper, but they have a negative impact on the environment.

  • Use public transport to get to supermarkets: it is estimated that our car journeys to the supermarket cost society more than £3.5 billion per year, in traffic emissions, noise, accidents and congestion.
  • Re-use carrier bags and recycle them when they begin to deteriorate. Annually, the energy that goes into the manufacture of carrier bags is equivalent to that used in driving a car more than 500 million miles.

ImageChristians have been given a command to cultivate and care for the earth (Gen. 2.15).
Over 400 chemical pesticides are routinely used in conventional farming and residues are often present in non-organic food.
£120m of taxpayers' money is used to pay for chemicals to be removed from drinking water, mainly as a result of the pesticides used in farming.
Organic farming is friendlier to the environment, so there is a much greater diversity of birds, butterflies and plants on organic farms.

Action
  • This week buy one organic food product
  • Change to free-range or organic eggs
