We are often unable to see the impact of our investments - it is not immediately obvious whether they are supporting ethically sound causes or not. One method of ensuring that our investments support ethical causes is to use ethical banks, which express social concern through the ways that they use their financial resources.
In the UK there are at least four organisations that practise in the area of ethical banking:

Why throw things away when you could use it for something else? By reusing our “waste” we reduce the amount of waste we produce, benefiting the environment. Why not:
- Use both sides of the paper – halve your paper use at a stroke! And while you're about it, why not use blank space on waste paper for notes?
- Refill used bottles (e.g. washing-up liquid, fabric conditioner, etc) – some shops will do this for you (e.g. Daily Bread, www.dailybread.co.uk ). Also, many foods come in disposable containers (margarine, ice-cream, etc) - you can use these for food storage once they're empty.
- Don't use disposable items such as razors, dusters, etc.

The Trade Justice Movement is a group of over 80 organisations (including fairtrade
organisations) campaigning for trade justice with the rules weighted to benefit poor people and the environment. They say that the UK Government should:
- Fight to ensure that governments, particularly in poor countries, can choose the best solutions to end poverty and protect the environment.
- End export dumping that damages the livelihoods of poor communities around the world.
- Make laws that stop big business profiting at the expense of people and the environment.

I tried this on Monday, it was hard work with cars rushing past as I cycled and walked - the train station was even more hectic!!! I felt like I only had time for quick "bless them Lord" phrases.
A different approach might be to keep an eye out for people the Lord draws you to and pray for them a bit more specifically?
The experience showed me how many people I just pass by every day, and how much rushing around they do!

A web visitor writes: re Adrian's remarks about bricks, they can disintegrate and cause problems with the flush mechanism. A better solution is to re-use (environmentally better than recycle) a 1pt plastic milk container. Thoroughly wash first, remove the label, fill with water and drop into cistern!
