Or first meeting of 2007 was on the 16th. We looked at the topic of "Discipleship". This is the theme for Sundays this term, and so we will tie into this for cluster too.

Getting our sleeves rolled up and our hands dirty

This term we will be seeking to focus on SERVICE and PRAYER as a means of building strong community within Cluster and building loving community as we look outward.
Our SERVICE, as an expression of how the Holy Spirit inspires, empowers and prepares us, will range from support for global neighbours, practical help for local neighbours, our ministry to St Barnabas as a whole, and the increasing level of service that we give each other as Cluster members.  These activities will be supported by our growth as a worshipping community, with PRAYER before, after, during, inside and around them, and plenty of opportunities for intercession and prayer ministry.

Clusters & Sunday Welcoming

Why are clusters being asked to welcome at Sunday services?
The main reason is to 'bridge the gap' between cluster and the church as a whole in an albeit slightly artificial way while the 'ministry growing out of cluster' part of the vision is still being developed.
The benefits are:
  • people in the church as a whole get to see the who the clusterers are,
  • a bit of what we are doing
  • and maybe will be inclined to come and join us.
  • Also it had been noticed that when newcomers visited the welcome desk they often ended up going to the cluster of the person they spoke to there - so this gives us all a chance of welcoming some newcomers.

We had a lively discussion following some ideas from Rob Bell's book "Velvet Elvis".
The aim was to investigate together what we believe about the Bible and how it should be applied today.
So what did we learn? There are no simple answers – if we disagree with someone (over an interpretation of scripture) we cannot be sure that we are right – we believe we are or we would change our opinions, but what if we are wrong? On the other hand is it enough to say “I can’t know I’m right so I’ll treat all interpretations as equally valid”?
So what can we do? Try to find and apply the truth of the Bible in the power of the Spirit. Avoid believing that we can always be right or that anyone who disagrees with us is refusing to believe the Bible – many interpretations are possible and there is no such thing as a simple literal reading.
