Supermarkets have made our lives easier and our food cheaper, but they have a negative impact on the environment.
- Use public transport to get to supermarkets: it is estimated that our car journeys to the supermarket cost society more than £3.5 billion per year, in traffic emissions, noise, accidents and congestion.
- Re-use carrier bags and recycle them when they begin to deteriorate. Annually, the energy that goes into the manufacture of carrier bags is equivalent to that used in driving a car more than 500 million miles.
